Machi.study is a free study app built by high-school students, for high-school students. Here is who makes it, why it exists, and how it pays for itself.
Machi.study is a free study app for high-school students. Flashcards, Learn, Review, practice tests, Match, Brain Dump, Build an answer, map sets and picture sets. Every mode is open to everybody, and no study screen carries an ad.
One of us was studying for honors chemistry on another study site, and the other was sitting next to him. Every five to ten questions, a fifteen-second video ad. Then he opened the mode that actually teaches you something, got two rounds in, and hit a paywall.
That is the whole origin. Not a gap spotted in a spreadsheet: a friend at a desk, interrupted and then stopped, while studying for a test he had that week. The notes were his. The interruption was not. So we built the version that does not do that.
Two high-school students in California.
Studying is free. There is no trial, no card, no locked mode and no cap on how many practice tests you can take. Advertising pays the hosting bill. The ads sit on pages like this one and beside a set. No study screen carries one, so nothing interrupts you while you are answering a question. Nobody is shown a personalized ad, at any age, and somebody who tells us they are under 13 gets no account and no ad at all.
The longer version, including exactly what is stored and what is not, is in the privacy policy.
Machi.study schedules your cards with FSRS, the same memory model Anki uses. It works out how likely you are to have forgotten a card and brings it back just before you do, so the work goes where the forgetting is. That is described properly in how Machi.study works, and the writing that explains the study methods themselves is in the study guides.
Flashcards are good for facts. Words, dates, formulas, the parts of a diagram. They will not teach you to write an essay, and they will not get you through a math problem you cannot start. If you have not read the chapter, a set cannot save you.
What they do is make the memorizing part fast, so you have more time for the rest.
There is a feedback form inside the app, in Settings, and it goes straight to us. For anything about your data or your account, email privacy@machi.study, which is the address in the privacy policy and the terms.
